WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower strike group has moved from the Eastern Mediterranean to the edge of the Arabian Peninsula, where it will continue supporting efforts to defeat Daesh terrorist group, the US Navy said in a press release on Tuesday.

"The strike group will conduct maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions for Operation Inherent Resolve," the campaign to defeat the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, the release explained.

Repositioning of the Eisenhower strike group was the first under a new US fleet response plan that is intended to meet military needs in a region that also includes Yemen and Somalia.

The Eisenhower strike group will operate with the US 5th Fleet, which is responsible for about 2.5 million square miles of water including the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean.
