May Pledges to Unite Britain as Prime Minister, Make Brexit Successful
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Britain needs early election after outgoing Prime Minister David Cameron's announcement that he will step down on Wednesday and Home Secretary Theresa May will succeed him, Molly Scott Cato, a Green Party member of the European Parliament for South West England, told Sputnik.

"I don’t think it’s acceptable to have just 300 members of the British Conservative party [330 members of the Tory parliamentary majority] to decide who our next prime minister should be. So I am joining the call for an early general election so that we can not only make a decision about who should be running the country, but also have a proper debate about what the situation should look like in future, outside the European Union," Cato said.

Snap election may take place in case if two thirds of the British parliament vote to dissolve the parliament, or if the new government headed by the new Tory leader does not receive a vote of confidence within two weeks after it is formed.

"We should have the government and the opposition working to restrain it. But neither side of the equation is working. We need not only a general election, but also changes in the electoral system, to make it more representative. Then we need a much stronger parliamentary democracy. We need a written constitution urgently," Cato said.

Cameron announced his resignation anticipated this fall after his campaign to keep the United Kingdom a member of the European Union lost in a June 23 referendum, as 52 percent of voters supported Brexit. Earlier on Monday, May became the only candidate to head the UK Conservative Party and to become the country’s new prime minister after her rival Andrea Leadsom withdrew her candidacy.
