The newspaper said that other 50 protesters had been detained near Grand Avenue and Dale Street in St. Paul, however, they were released subsequently.
"This is the first time in my 28 years we have observed this level of violence toward our public servants. It's really a disgrace… I am absolutely disgusted, [and] I am not going to tolerate it," St. Paul Police Chief Todd Axtell was quoted as saying by the daily.
According to Axtell, at least 21 police officers were injured during the protests.
The protest came amid public outrage against Wednesday's killing of 32-year-old Castile, who was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in Minnesota. Another African-American man Alton Sterling was fatally shot this week by two policemen in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
