French police used tear gas and rubber batons against fans rallying in central Paris after the French national team’s defeat to Portugal in the Euro 2016 Football Championship final, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

PARIS (Sputnik) – Thousands of football fans gathered in the main avenue of Paris — Champs Elysees — after the final match of the tournament, which was held at the city’s Stade de France stadium. Some of them were using firecrackers and flares.

The celebrations quickly escalated into clashes between the fans and the law enforcement. Some of the fans started throwing glass bottles and other items at the police personnel, forcing them to use the rubber batons and tear gas.

On Sunday, the Portuguese national team won the Championship for the first time in the history of the tournament, with its player Eder having scored the only goal of the match during extra time. The Portuguese team managed to win despite its captain Cristiano Ronaldo receiving an injury during the game and being replaced by Ricardo Quaresma.
