Russia should carefully study reports of doping violations in Russian sports while continuing to fight against doping on a state level, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday.

TURKU (Sputnik) – Russia plans to step up efforts at holding athletes liable for doping and giving law enforcement expanded powers to investigate abuse, Putin said.

"Just yesterday I once again spoke with the Russian Government, we decided to support legislation stiffening the responsibility and adopt a law on the possible use of investigative techniques to give our law enforcement agencies the right to detect doping."

He said the Russian Investigative Committee and the Prosecutor General’s Office are carrying out the relevant inspections and work to obtain factual information regarding alleged violations.

"First of all, I want to say that we should be grateful to our colleagues from the World Anti-Doping Agency – of WADA – and treat their information with the utmost care," Putin said at a press conference after talks with his Finnish counterpart.

"We at the state level have always fought and will fight with any doping. We hope that the information coming to us, or which we ourselves receive, will be objective. We should not under any circumstances rely on, or reach practical conclusions and practical steps, on the basis of rumors or simple suspicion. We need to get the facts," Putin asserted.
