Russia, NATO to Have Mutual Observation Flights Under Open Skies Treaty
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Experts from 22 member states of the Treaty have confirmed full conformity of a domestically-produced digital observation complex to the requirements and restrictions of the Treaty on Open Skies," according to the ministry's press service.

Russia will be the first country to use such a kind of equipment, a few years ahead of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, which still use analog equipment.

"The cameras installed on Tu-154M/LK-1 aircraft were tested by international experts…. in the course of two days. The international examination was carried out in order to establish the observation equipment's compliance with the limits defined by the Treaty on Open Skies."

The Treaty on Open Skies was signed in March 1992 and became one of the major confidence-building measures in Europe after the Cold War. It entered into force on January 1, 2002, and currently has 34 states parties, including Russia and most NATO members.

Moscow ratified the Treaty on Open Skies on May 26, 2001.
