Russia is capable of feeding itself without importing food, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia is capable of feeding itself at this point, without importing food, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Monday.

"Today, we are collecting crops that could put us among the top three grain suppliers to the world market. The level of food security has noticeably increased. Now, Russia is able to feed itself without foreign food imports,"  Medvedev said at a United Russia party congress.

Since 2014, the European Union, the United States and their allies have imposed several rounds of sanctions against Russia over accusations of Kremlin's alleged interference in the Ukrainian conflict — a claim that Moscow has repeatedly denied. In response, Russia introduced food embargo in August 2014 on products originating from states that imposed the restrictive measure.
