Russia's Permanent Representative to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov said that he does not expect a parade of referendums in the EU member states in the near future after Brexit.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The European Union will not fall apart after Brexit, and a "parade of referendums" is highly unlikely, Russia's Permanent Representative to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov said Monday.

On Thursday, a nationwide referendum was held in the United Kingdom in which 51.9 percent of voters opted in favor of the country withdrawing from the European Union. After the official results were revealed, Prime Minister David Cameron, who headed the Remain campaign, said he would resign in October.

"The EU will not fall apart, and obviously, we should not not expect a parade of referendums in the near future," Chizhov told the Rossiya-24 television channel.

According to him, the current situation, in the contrary, may give rise to greater consolidation of the European Union.
