Russia Notes Contradictions in UK Post-Brexit, Declines to Interfere
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The decision by the United Kingdom to leave the European Union may have a serious impact on global security and is likely to erode the consensus on economic sanctions against Russia, media reported Monday.

According to the reports, the United Kingdom has been one of the biggest advocates of the anti-Russia sanctions, supporting the hard line taken by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in relation to Moscow.

"The biggest blow is on the Russian sanctions… Sanctions policy is going to be weakened, because the UK’s voice will not be as big as we hoped," former NATO official and senior associate of the consultancy group Rasmussen Global Fabrice Pothier told The Wall Street Journal.

Furthermore, the news outlet reported that some nations, such as Italy, Spain and Greece, were considering easing the anti-Russia sanctions.

The media outlet also noted that Brexit could leave Britain’s armed forces diminished due to the possible breakup of the United Kingdom or as a result of reduced spending on defense driven by economic problems.

Since 2014, relations between Russia and the European Union have soured amid the crisis in Ukraine. Brussels, Washington and their allies have introduced several rounds of anti-Russia sanctions since Crimea became part of Russia in 2014 and the escalation of the Ukrainian conflict.

Russia has repeatedly refuted the allegations, warning that the Western sanctions are counterproductive and undermine global stability.
