Brexit, the referendum vote to leave the European Union, could leave the United Kingdom in a far stronger position geostrategically, militarily and financially in dealing with Europe, military historian and leading US military tactician Col. Douglas Macgregor told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "Contrary to what [international financier George] Soros and the Trotskyite Euro-Left contends, Britain will thrive and end up in an even stronger strategic and economic position," Macgregor said on Friday.

Doug Macgregor holds a doctoral degree in international relations from the US Military Academy at West Point. He commanded in the Battle of 73 Easting, a decisive tank fight during the 1991 Gulf War.

Britain's offshore position, combined with its determination to preserve its free market and cultivate global trade, will make it richer than ever, Macgregor predicted.

"The Germans are already rushing to ensure their trade arrangements with Britain are not harmed by angry Brussels bureaucrats. It won't be long before Germany and its North European cousins strike out on their own: When they do, they will owe their revival and success to British leadership."

Brexit would free the more fiscally responsible British people from the big-spending deficits of France, Italy, Greece and other southern nations in the European Union, Macgregor maintained.

"Politically, the European Union was always dominated by the Francophones, in part because Germany, Britain and the Netherlands never cooperated closely enough to wrest influence away from the spendthrift Francophones and their southern cheerleaders."

The United Kingdom was likely also to strengthen its ties with the United States and NATO after it left the European Union, Macgregor suggested.

"As for the defense-military impact, there will be negative impact in the short term, but in the long term, I think a healthier and more independent Britain will be a better partner for the United States in and beyond NATO."

The Brexit vote was also a disastrous blow for left-wing parties in Europe, Macgregor argued.

"The Euro-Left is horrified. The Left's dream of erasing national identity, national culture, national language, national laws and national borders is sinking under a tidal wave of popular resistance. Democracy is failing the Left."

The Brexit vote could also be seen as a protest by ordinary British people against the enormous influx of immigrants from around the world who had transformed London from an English to a global city, Macgregor added.

"London, the 'global city' that voted for EU membership is at least 50 percent non-British in character, culture and race/ethnicity. The British know it and most deeply dislike what London has become: Londonistan."

London had become an example not to emulate but to be rejected to millions of British people, Macgregor added.

"In the minds of many, London is now the poster child for the Left's campaign to annihilate Britain and its indigenous, British peoples in favor of some nihilistic, Marxist Utopia, overrun with Muslims."
