A woman, murdered nine years ago, was elected as a member of the rural local government in the eastern state of Bihar.

Mithlesh Devi has been elected as a local government member in the recently concluded 10-phase elections, officials said on Friday. According to the documents, Mithlesh was elected after she filed her nomination papers and contested the polls.

However, the woman was murdered nine years ago in Bihar's Sitamarhi district, and her husband Sikandar Mukhiya is the main suspect in the case, officials stated.

District police found out that Sikandar, who has been missing since the incident occurred, played a trick by including his second wife Gudia Devi in the name of his first one to contest the polls.

"Sikandar has done this to ensure that Gudia poses as his first wife in court to help him get acquitted in the case," a district police official said.

The case is still to undergo further investigation.
