The European Central Bank (ECB) is monitoring financial markets and other European central banks following the Brexit referendum, the ECB said in a press release on Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.

"Following the outcome of the UK referendum, the European Central Bank (ECB) is closely monitoring financial markets and is in close contact with other central banks. The ECB has prepared for this contingency in close contact with the banks that it supervises and considers that the euro area banking system is resilient in terms of capital and liquidity," the press release read.

The ECB also promised to continue to oversee both price and financial stability in the Eurozone.
