A man who opened fire on Thursday in a cinema in the southwestern German town of Viernheim had no Islamist background, Darmstadt police spokesman Bernd Hochstaedter said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The incident took place shortly after 3 p.m. local time (13:00 GMT) when the man entered the Kinopolis cinema at the Rhein-Neckar-Zentrum. The shooting resulted in no casualties.

"There is no evidence about the motive [of the attacker]. However, we are certain about one thing: the incident has no Islamist background," Hochstaedter was quoted as saying by the Mannheimer Morgen newspaper.

The incident took place shortly after 3 p.m. local time (13:00 GMT) when the man entered the Kinopolis cinema at the Rhein-Neckar-Zentrum.

Darmstadt police confirmed to Sputnik that nobody was injured in the hostage crisis in the cinema. "The shooter is dead and no one is injured," a spokesman for the police service said.
