Russian Ambassador to Moldova Farid Mukhametshin and local non-governmental organizations' members took part in the events dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War beginning on Wednesday.

CHISINAU (Sputnik) — Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, opening the chapter of World War II, called the Great Patriotic War, which ended on May 9, 1945, with the Nazis surrender. This day is marked as the Day of Memory and Grief in Russia and some former Soviet countries.

"Not only Russia marks this sorrowful date but also other [Commonwealth of Independent States] CIS countries, as well as the anti-Hitler coalition states. Hundreds of thousands of families suffered from fascism during the Great Patriotic War," Mukhametshin said.
