US Urges N Korea to Refrain From Provocations Amid Threats to Nuke US Bases
22:28 GMT 20.06.2016 (Updated: 11:01 GMT 06.08.2022) The United States is calling on North Korea to avoid any actions that might further escalate tensions on the peninsular amid the recent threats by Pyongyang to nuke US military bases in South Korea, Pentagon spokesman Navy Cmdr. Gary Ross told Sputnik.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Monday, the North Korean Defense Committee said it would respond with nuclear strikes against US military bases in South Korea in case of any provocations.
“We are closely monitoring the situation on the Korean Peninsula in coordination with our regional allies,” Ross stated on Monday. “We urge North Korea to refrain from provocative actions that aggravate tensions and instead focus on fulfilling its international obligations and commitments.”
Last month, Pyongyang urged Seoul to accept its offer to hold military talks and called for joint steps to carry out measures for national unity, citing the need to ease tensions on the Korean peninsula. South Korea rejected the proposal, demanding "a real turn" toward denuclearization.
Tensions over North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs escalated after Pyongyang said on January 6 that it had successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test and put a satellite into orbit on February 7. The moves violated UN Security Council resolutions, and prompted the United Nations as well as the United States to impose sanctions.
