Crimea to Start Additional Checks in Summer Camps After Kareliа Tragedy

Russia's southwestern Crimea Republic will carry out additional checks of summer camps following the deadly tragedy in northwestern Karelia region, local authorities said Monday.

SIMFEROPOL (Russia), (Sputnik) — On Saturday, several boats carrying a 51-member group from Karelia's Park-Hotel Syamozero summer camp, consisting of children and their adult coaches, capsized on Lake Syamozero during a storm. According to the latest information, 13 children died and one remains missing. A criminal case was opened on Sunday, with at least five arrests made.

"Additional inspections of summer camps are planned in the Republic of Crimea," the government's press service said in a statement.

The heads of Crimean supervised program for children are also recommended to organize regular patrols on the territories, according to the statement.
