TOKYO (Sputnik) — Masuzoe, 67, faced strong criticism as media leaks reveled that he had allegedly spent some $2 million of public funds for private purposes, including trips and luxuries. On Wednesday, he was expected to face a no-confidence motion in the Tokyo Assembly, but the vote would be canceled due to his decision to resign.
On Monday, speaking in the Tokyo Assembly, Masudzoe promised to return all the salary he had received and asked to give him the opportunity to finalize his term by September in case of no-confidence vote.
The election of the new mayor of Tokyo are expected to be held in late July or early August.
