Eighty-five years ago Soviet authorities decided to start the construction of the Moscow subway. Below is the rare footage of how the construction process began.

A decision on the construction of the Moscow Metro was made following the report of Lazar Kaganovich, a Soviet politician and one of the main associates of Joseph Stalin.

The new means of transportation was designed to improve the transport situation in city and partly relieve the tram lines.

The Moscow Metro is not only an efficient means of transportation, but also a distinct example of the Soviet monumental architecture. The overall length of railway lines in the Moscow Metro is over 300 kilometers. This is equal to the distance from Vienna to Prague.
