French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve allowed the country's police on Tuesday to take service weapons home after a deadly attack on a police commander and his family.

PARIS (Sputnik) — On Monday evening, a man stabbed a 42-year-old police commander and took his wife and child hostage at their house in the Paris northwestern suburb of Magnanville. The wife was murdered but the child was rescued.

"I made the decision to allow the police to take weapons home after finishing their shift," Cazeneuve said upon his arrival to the police department building for which the murdered police officer worked.

Earlier in the day, Cazeneuve confirmed that Monday's attack on the police commander and his family was an act of terrorism.

The murderer was killed in the assault by riot police.
