The whole process of the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union (Brexit), starting from the referendum and ending with the possible actual Brexit, may take up to seven years, President of the European Council Donald Tusk said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The UK nationals are set to vote on June 23 in a referendum on the country's EU membership, after Prime Minister David Cameron and the leaders of the 27 EU member states agreed in February to grant the United Kingdom a special status within the bloc.

"The dissolution of all [UK-EU] contractual obligations and ties will be sad, but relatively simple, it will take approximately for two years. The talks on the new relations status will be much more difficult. Each of the 27 EU member states and the European Parliament must approve the overall result. It will take at least five years to complete the process, and, I am afraid, without guarantees of success," Tusk told the Bild newspaper in an interview published on Sunday.
