WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States and Cuba discussed a possible cooperation on preventing and countering terrorism, Cuba’s Foreign Ministry announced in a release on Thursday.

"On Wednesday, June 8th a technical meeting took place in Havana between the Cuban and US authorities in charge of preventing and dealing with terrorism, for the purpose of exchanging ideas on the possibilities of cooperation in this area," the release stated. The two countries’ representatives agreed to continue holding technical meetings on dealing with terrorism, the release noted.

The Foreign Ministry pointed out that the Cuban delegation was represented by the Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Relations, the Attorney General’s Office and General Customs, while the US delegation included officials from the Departments of Homeland Security and Justice as well as the US Embassy in Havana.

Relations between Washington and Havana started to improve after President Barack Obama announced in December 2014 a historic shift in US policy, including the loosening of a decades-old US trade and travel embargo on Cuba.
