The May output of Brazil’s state oil and gas company Petrobras increased by five percent as compared to April, the company has announced.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The output totaled 2.83 million barrels of oil per day, Petrobras said on Wednesday. As compared to last year, the May figure increased two percent.

The company’s average oil output reached 2.24 barrels per day, which is a 6 percent increase on April and a 1 percent increase on the May 2015 figure.

In 2014, corruption schemes in Brazil's state oil and gas company Petrobras surfaced, triggering a wave of discontent with President Dilma Rousseff who headed the company in 2003-2010.

In May, Brazil's Senate voted in favor of starting impeachment proceedings against Rousseff after she was accused of concealing the country’s budget deficit ahead of the 2014 re-election.

The 68-year-old has been suspended from office for 180 days, pending trial. Vice President Michel Temer is assuming presidency during that period.
