The Norwegian Royal House has been spending money allocated by the Norwegian Parliament on maintaining their privately-owned estates for 15 years, local media reported Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Large sums of money annually allocated to the King, the Queen, the Crown Prince and the Princess have been spent on private expenses, namely to cover costs of the maintenance of King Harald and Crown Prince Haakon's private property, the Dagbladet newspaper said, citing its overview of the money transfers to and from the royal family.

The sum allocated to the Norwegian Royal Family in 2016 amounted to $2.5 million.

In April, the Dagbladet reported that the Norwegian monarchy costs the state $55 million per year, with $14 million of this sum being spent on items such as police escorts which was not accounted for by the state’s Royal House budget.
