The United Kingdom remaining in the European Union after the country's upcoming Brexit referendum would be better for NATO, the alliance's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — More cooperation is necessary in the currently fragmented security environment, he added, stressing that the United Kingdom should play a key role both in Europe and in transatlantic cooperation.

"I strongly believe that a strong United Kingdom in a strong Europe is good both for the United Kingdom, it is good for Europe, but it is also good for NATO," Stoltenberg said at a Playbook Cocktails meeting organized by the Politico.

UK nationals are set to vote on June 23 in a referendum on the country's EU membership.

Prime Minister David Cameron advocates the necessity to remain in the European Union after he and the leaders of the 27 EU member states agreed in February to grant the United Kingdom a special status within the bloc.
