UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — He added that the uncompromising stance of the Syrian opposition's High Negotiations Committee (HNC) remained the main obstacle for the political settlement.
"It should be clearly understood that the pressure on Damascus would not achieve the desired effect. You need to apply pressure on those who continue to support terrorists, including the infamous al-Nusra [Front]. The flexibility in the negotiations must be showed by all the parties," Churkin said at a UN-EU cooperation meeting.
The latest round of the Syrian peace talks took place in Geneva on April 13-27. The HNC walked out of the negotiations, citing the continuous fighting in Syria and the lack of progress on humanitarian issues.
