Farewell, Champ: 'Greatest' Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali Dies at 74

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who was hospitalized in the Phoenix, Arizona, area with a respiratory issue, died on Saturday at the age of 74.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, has died at the age of 74, NBC reports.

"After a 32-year battle with Parkinson's disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74. The three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer died this evening," Bob Gunnell, a family spokesman, told NBC on Friday.

The sportsman has struggled with Parkinson’s disease since 1980s. He died at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had been treated for respiratory complications related to his ilness for the past few days, NBC said.

 

Public memorial service will take place in Ali’s native city of Louisville, Kentucky, NBC News noted.

 

​Ali won the Olympic Games in 1960. The boxer became the world heavyweight champion at the age of 22, eventually winning three such titles by 1978.
