The operation is commanded by a joint task force and involves approximately 100 Canadian troops, including technicians from the Canadian Forces Information Operations Group, military members from the Mapping and Charting Establishment, and personnel and aircraft from the Royal Canadian Air Force.

WASHINGTON, June 1 (Sputnik) — Canada has sent troops in the high Arctic as part of an annual technical team deployment to help enhance surveillance and show their presence in the region, Canada’s Department of National Defense announced in a release on Wednesday.

"Operation NEVUS 2016 (Op NE 16) will take place in and around Canadian Forces Station Alert, Nunavut, from June 1 to 30, 2016," the release stated. "The… northern operations contribute to wider Canadian efforts to improve northern surveillance and reconnaissance, and to demonstrate a visible presence in Canada’s Arctic."

Op NE 16 is an annual deployment of a technical team to Ellesmere Island to carry out maintenance on the High Arctic Data Communications System, according to the release.
