Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated on Tuesday Philippines elected President Rodrigo Duterte on the win and expressed hope that bilateral relations would improve due to mutual effort.

BEIJING (Sputnik) — Duterte won the May 9 presidential elections and is expected to take office on June 30.

"Maintaining and deepening of the good-neighborly and mutually advantageous cooperation is a common responsibility of the two countries' leaders. I hope that due to the efforts of both sides, bilateral relations will return to the path of healthy development," Xi said, as quoted by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Chinese leader added that the bilateral ties boost is significant both for Beijing and Manila.
