MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Director General of the UN Office at Geneva Michael Moller accused the leaders at the European Union of pandering to xenophobia and racism at the height of the migration crisis and warned of millions more refugees arriving on EU soil.

"It’s just going to accelerate. Young people all have cellphones and they can see what’s happening in other parts of the world, and that acts as a magnet," Moller told Britain’s The Times daily on Sunday.

The diplomat criticized the failure among EU member states to share the "manageable" burden of allocating asylum seekers that he estimated amounted to 0.2 percent of Europe’s population.

Moller, a Danish national, accused several EU leaders of "pandering" to "xenophobic" and "racist positions," adding that they had allowed the political fallout from migration to "grow out of proportion."

His comments come amid signs that Egypt is following in Libya's footsteps as a transit point for migrants attempting to cross into Europe and the lucrative smuggling trade.
