US aerospace giant Raytheon secured a contract worth more than $365 million to produce Aegis radar and missile control equipment for the US Navy as well as the governments of Japan and South Korea, the US Department of Defense said in a press release.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Eighty percent of the order, according to the release, will be delivered to South Korea and Japan under the US Foreign Military Sales program, with the remainder allocated to the US Navy.

"Raytheon… is being awarded a $365,848,801 fixed-price-incentive, cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for the production of Aegis Weapon System AN/SPY-1D(V) Radar Transmitter Group, Missile Fire Control System MK 99 equipment, and associated engineering services," the release stated on Friday.

The SPY-1D(V) is a high-powered radar transmitter that supports search, track and missile guidance functions, according to Raytheon, while the MK99 system communicates with the mission control station to identify and illuminate air targets.

The Aegis system uses advanced radar and powerful computers to control weapons aimed at enemy targets. Originally developed for ships, the system has been modified for land use, and it is central to a NATO missile defense system now being installed — over Russian objections — in Romania and Poland.
