"Today we’re excited to announce the latest step in our global cloud infrastructure as Microsoft and Facebook announce plans to build 'MAREA' – a new, state-of-the art subsea cable across the Atlantic. The new MAREA cable will help meet the growing customer demand for high speed, reliable connections for cloud and online services for Microsoft, Facebook and their customers," Frank Rey, the director of Global Network Acquisition Group at Microsoft, was quoted as saying in the statement Thursday.
According to Rey, the cable project with the length of over 4,000 miles, is expected to transmit some 160 terabytes of data per second. This will be the highest-capacity subsea cable to ever cross the Atlantic.
The cost of the project, which is expected to be completed in 2017, has not been announced by the companies.
According to the statement, a subsidiary of the Spanish telecommunications giant Telefonica, Telxius, will operate and manage Marea.
