BAE Systems Technology Solutions and Services has received a $49.6 million US Air Force contract to manage, operate and maintain advanced radar systems at five key strategic missile warning bases around the world, the Department of Defense announced.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Work will be performed at Beale Air Force Base, California; Cape Cod Air Force Station, Massachusetts; Clear Air Force Station, Alaska; Thule Air Base, Greenland; and Royal Air Force Fylingdales, United Kingdom, the Defense Department noted.

"BAE Systems Technology Solutions and Services, Rockville, Maryland, has been awarded a $49.6 million… contract… to manage, operate, maintain and logistically support the Solid State Phased Array Radar Systems," the announcement said on Thursday.

The five bases comprise the basic ground-based radar system to detect all potential intercontinental ballistic missile nuclear attacks against the United States.

The Solid State Phased Array Radar System (SSPARS) is a US Air Force radar, computer and communications system for missile warning and space surveillance that is deployed at five geographically separated locations around the world, all in the Northern Hemisphere.
