GROZNY (Russia) (Sputnik) — The Russian Security Council estimates that some 90,000 people died in terror attacks over the past two years, most of them in Africa and the Middle East, the council's secretary said Wednesday.

"In the past two years alone, the world saw more than 32,000 terror acts, with some 90,000 people falling victim to terrorism," Nikolai Patrushev told reporters in the city of Grozny.

Patrushev said the majority of assaults had been conducted in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Iraq and Syria. The death toll in Syria and Iraq doubled in comparison to 2013, while attacks became even more sophisticated and brutal.

Patrushev was speaking on the heels of an international security meeting in Russia’s Caucasus region of Chechnya, which brought together senior security and intelligence officials from some 60 countries.
