The US military should elevate the US Cyber Command (CYBERCOM) to a unified combatant command to better address an increasing number of cyberthreats, US lawmakers said in a statement on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Wednesday, a group of eight senators introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would elevate CYBERCOM to a combatant commander designation.

"Elevating Cyber Command will ensure that our military is always one step ahead of our adversaries in light of the increased global threats today," US Senator Steve Daines stated.

Last month, CYBERCOM Commander Adm. Michael Rogers told the US Senate that elevating the designation would "generate better mission outcomes" against increasing cyberthreats.

In April, US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said that CYBERCOM had played a major role in disrupting the Daesh group’s Internet communications and ability to move funds.

The US Cyber Command was activated in June 2009 and reports to US Strategic Command.
