ANKARA (Sputnik) – According to the NTV television channel, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accepted his resignation and asked him to carry on fulfilling his duties until the new government is formed.

Earlier this month, Davutoglu confirmed media reports that he would step down from the post of the ruling Justice and Development Party's (AKP) leader and consequently the post of the country's prime minister after an extraordinary meeting of party leaders scheduled on May 22.

Earlier in the day, Turkish Transport Minister and Erdogan’s loyalist, Binali Yildirim, was elected new chair of the AKP party.
