MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the TOLO News channel, citing local police, the operation was launched in the Baghlan-e-Markazi district of the Baghlan province. Clashes between the security forces and the extremists are still taking place. At least 21 militants were injured.

Security in Afghanistan has drastically deteriorated in recent months as both Taliban insurgents and the Islamic State group, outlawed in Russia, the United States and several other countries, have expanded their activities in the south of the country.

On Saturday, the Afghan Defense Ministry said that the country’s security forces killed 30 militants and wounded 30 more in several provinces that day.
