NATO does not seek confrontation or a new Cold War with Russia and looks for more constructive ties with Moscow, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday.

CHISINAU (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, inaugural ceremony in southern Romanian settlement of Deveselu marked the operational certification of the Aegis Ashore missile defense system. Russia has repeatedly expressed concern over the establishment of an US-designed missile defense system in Europe.

"NATO does not seek confrontation with Russia, we don't seek a new Cold War and we will continue to strive for a more constructive relationship with Russia," Stoltenberg told reporters at a joint press conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

He added that the missile defense system was not "about Russia" and was not directed against Russia.

Under NATO's planned missile defense system, approved in 2010, during a NATO summit in Lisbon, radars and interceptors will be placed in several NATO states, such as Romania and Poland. The shield will be strengthened by naval forces.
