LONDON (Sputnik) — Last week, Sadiq Khan, a London-born son of Pakistani immigrants, became the first Muslim to be elected as mayor of the UK capital.
"What Thursday election showed is that mainstream Islam and western liberal values are compatible. It is possible to be like me Western and Muslim. All of us have multiple identities. I am a Londoner, I am British, I am European, I am a father, I am a husband, I am of Islam faith and Asian origin… No one thing defines who we are," Sadiq Khan told reporters.
Khan noted that he was happy that his home city had chosen unity over division and rejected the policy of the fear. "Our campaign had Londoners who are Jews, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhists… black, white, guy, lesbian, old, young. It was a great campaign. It is the city we call London," he stressed.
Integration is a crucial task to be faced with in next few years, Khan outlined.
