At least 240,000 people took to the streets of Warsaw on Saturday, in support of democracy in Poland, urging the country not to distance itself from the European Union.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the TVN24 channel, the Civic Platform opposition faction, the Committee for the Defence of Democracy organization and the Modern liberal party are taking part in the event.

"This will be a long march which will lead us to a free Poland… This is a long march to victory, we shall not allow [chairman of ruling Law and Justice party] Jaroslaw Kaczynski to distance us from Europe, to create an iron curtain," Grzegorz Schetyna, the leader of the Civic Platform, told protesters from the stage.

Former president Bronislaw Komorowski, in turn, said he wanted to fight for the country’s place in the European Union and democracy.
