Kyle Andrew Bessemer, 29, has been arrested for spraying rat poison on food in several grocery stores, and is claiming that he did so because he thought someone was trying to poison him.

Three Dead After Kansas Ice Cream Poisoning
Bessemer was caught on an Ann Arbor Whole Foods surveillance camera entering the store and spraying the salad bar with a mixture of rat poison, hand cleaner and water. The store was one of three he allegedly targeted.

“It’s a very scary crime that happened,” Washtenaw County prosecutor Brian Mackie told the local Fox affiliate. “Thankfully as far as we know, nobody has been hurt.”

Prosecutors stated that "on April 22 he purchased rat poison specifically for a salad which is an anti-coagulant that causes rats to internally bleed."

“He’s going all over pouring this rat poison because he knows people are going to ingest it,” Mackie said.

Now, officials are looking into whether or not Bessemer also went to a dozen other stores in the Ann Arbor area.

Bessemer, who is unemployed and has a history of mental illness, is being held on a $250,000 cash bond, but even if he pays he must remain on house arrest. He is facing two felony charges for poisoning and two felonies for poisoning property and causing damage. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 70 years in prison.
