If NATO is using the flawed and immoral logic of placing the Russian Federation on par with a bunch of ratty, genocidal religious maniacs then their analysts are not just politically subservient to failed and reactionary policies- they are incompetent. If NATO places 4000 extra troops in the Baltic and then tries to coax Finland into formal NATO membership, the Russian Federation is duty bound to respond in kind: NATO does not then get to claim that it is being 'threatened,' no more than a man who brandishes a machete in a shopping center gets to claim that he is being threatened when a burly shopper out with his kids decides to arm himself with a hammer. NATO seeks to position itself as both perpetrator and victim which in terms of forensic psychology is the profile of the paranoid schizophrenic.

Russia is not a threat to anyone, but will pay attention to actions that are potentially dangerous to its interests, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Peskov commented on a recent statement by NATO Commander Curtis Scaparrotti for the Alliance’s members to be constantly ready to counter threats from Russia and terrorists.
On Wednesday, Scaparrotti assumed command of the NATO forces in Europe. During the change of command ceremony, he named Russia as one of the Alliance's main challenges, stating that NATO must enhance its level of readiness and be prepared "to fight tonight if the deterrence fails."
"We’ve repeatedly said that Russia doesn’t present a threat to anyone. Russia is consistently in favor of mutually beneficial cooperation while taking into account the interests of all of its partners… But at the same time, Russia obviously cannot ignore any actions that directly or potentially could present a threat to its national interests."
