Six people were killed in a gang attack in the Honduran high crime rate city of San Pedro Sula, police stated.

Six people were killed in a gang attack in the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula, which is notorious for its high crime rate, police said in a statement.

According to the authorities, the victims were shot on Saturday while sitting in two cars not far from a prison. Two of them were women, the statement added.

Two suspects have reportedly been detained in connection with the shooting.

Honduras has one of the highest murder rates in the world. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, homicide claims the lives of approximately 90.4 out of every 100,000 people in the Central American country of slightly over 8 million people every year; 70 percent of all murders are related to drug trafficking.

The country is currently involved in an effort to curtail rampant corruption among its police, who have been accused of drug ties and extrajudicial killings. More than two dozen police commanders were fired on Friday, 10 days after five top police generals were dismissed, according to the New York Times.
