The issue of the Polish demolition of Soviet-era monuments is a test for strength of the relations between Russia and Poland, the Russian Ambassador to the country said on Saturday.

BRANIEWO (Sputnik) — In March, the plans to remove a large number of the Soviet-era monuments in Poland were announced by the head of the country's Institute of National Remembrance.

Polish Town Wins Kudos for Keeping Soviet-Era Monument

"We hope that this campaign will not be implemented and supported on the ground and by the Polish population. Because it will be the moment of truth, test for the strength of relations between states, but especially between nations. Our Polish partners have to understand that this issue is very sensitive to us and if something like this happens, it will not pass without consequences," Sergey Andreev told journalists.

Relations between Moscow and Warsaw have been strained by repeated cases of the demolition and dismantling of Soviet monuments in the country as well as alleged attempts by some Polish officials to distort history and belittle the contribution Soviet soldiers made to the victory over Nazism in World War II.
