Spain's King Felipe VI will not put forward a candidacy for the post of prime minister as none of the political leaders could secure a parliamentary majority, the Royal Palace said in a statement on Tuesday.

New Far-Right Respeto Party Founded in Spain
MADRID (Sputnik) — nThe decision, in essence, paves the way for new parliamentary elections in June.

In December, Spaniards voted in general election that ended the established two-party system, which existed for more than three decades. The People’s Party (PP) won 123 seats in the lower house of parliament, 64 less than in the previous election. PSOE won 90, and left-wing Podemos came third, securing 69 seats. At least 176 seats are required for a parliamentary majority to form a coalition government.

If parties fail to find common ground before a May 2 deadline, the new elections are due to be held on June 26.
