Papua New Guinea's (PNG) Supreme Court ruled the detention of migrants applying for asylum in Australia at the center located on PNG's island of Manus is illegal, local media reported Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Australia detains refugees who come to the country to seek asylum in offshore detention camps on the Manus Island in PNG and Nauru in the South Pacific, while their application is being processed by Canberra.

ABC broadcaster reported that PNG's Supreme Court ruled that the detention in the camp violated the right to personal liberty in the country's constitution.

The broadcaster added that the court ordered Canberra and Port Moresby to end the detention of the asylum applicants on the PNG territory.

Australian policy in regard to the migrants applying for asylum in the country has been repeatedly criticized by rights groups for inhumane living conditions and violation of human rights.
