MOSCOW (Sputnik) The Kremlin welcomes the appointment of lawmaker Tatiana Moskalkova as new human rights commissioner of Russia, spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday.

Earlier in the day, 323 Russian State Duma lawmakers voted for the candidacy of Moskalkova of the Just Russia party. There were six candidates running for the position of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation.

"We know that this time the president did not use his right to nominate a candidate. In this case, of course, the Kremlin welcomes this decision and welcomes this candidacy. We expect that all achievements, all good traditions of ombudsmen in this area will be continued," Peskov told reporters.

Ella Pamfilova, the former High Commissioner for Human Rights, was elected last month as the new head of the Central Elections Committee.
