Dipa Karmakar has become the first Indian female gymnast to qualify for the Olympic Games. She will also be the first Indian gymnast taking part in the Games since 1964.

Dipa Karmakar will become the first Indian woman at the Olympics and India's first gymnast taking part in the Games in 52 years. Since India became an independent country, only 11 Indian male gymnasts have taken part in the Olympic Games: two in 1952, three in 1956 and six in 1964.

The 22-year-old Dipa Karmakar put up a strong performance in the final qualifier on Sunday, scoring 52.698 points to guarantee a place in the Rio Olympics 2016.

Karmakar is one of only five gymnasts to have successfully completed "the Produnova," one of the hardest and most dangerous vaults in the discipline. She has also logged the world's highest score on this maneuver.

The International Federation of Gymnastics has confirmed Karmakar's Rio Games qualification in its official release. She has been listed as the 79th gymnast among individual qualifiers in the list of women's artistic gymnast who have qualified for the Rio Olympics.

In 2014, Dipa Karmakar received a bronze at the vault event in Glasgow and became the first Indian woman gymnast to win a Commonwealth Games gymnastics medal. In 2015 she was also the first Indian woman gymnast to compete in the finals of the World Championships.
