MOSCOW (Sputnik) Baghdad is requesting Moscow's assistance in the restoration of historic sites and cultural heritage damaged by the Daesh, Iraq's Ambassador to Russia Ismieal Shafiq Muhsin said Friday.

"After 2003, historical monuments and a large number of cultural heritage objects were damaged in Iraq. Thousands of monuments were stolen and destroyed, especially during the Daesh occupation of Iraqi cities in 2014, when the richest and most important regions of Iraq were captured. Terrorist groups have long supplemented their financing by selling stolen, priceless cultural heritage objects to their international agents. I wish to call on the relevant organizations in Russia and in the world to help the Iraqi government return its historic heritage objects," Muhsin said.
