LUGANSK (Sputnik) More than a thousand people remain missing in the aftermath of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, the press service of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Thursday.

"No one knows the exact number, but hundreds of mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, husbands and wives are waiting for news about their loved ones. It is unknown whether they are alive or dead, and this uncertainty is dooming their families to great suffering," the ICRC press service told RIA Novosti, citing the head of ICRC delegation in Ukraine, Alain Aeschlimann.

The press service stressed that the ICRC makes every effort possible to facilitate cooperation between all parties to the conflict to find those missing. According to the organization, 430 Ukrainian families look for their relatives with help of ICRC.

Kiev authorities launched a military operation against independence militias in eastern Ukraine in April 2014. The confrontation has claimed over 9,000 lives, according to the UN estimates.
