US Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson and visiting Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano agreed to step up bilateral cooperation on counterterrorism, intelligence sharing and border security, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Johnson and Alfano also discussed the immigration crisis in Europe and the security situation across the continent after the deadly terrorist attacks in Brussels in March, the statement noted.

"Johnson met with… Alfano to discuss a range of homeland security-related issues, including efforts to facilitate lawful trade and travel, border security, and information sharing to enhance counterterrorism efforts," the statement said on Tuesday.

The two ministers explored "opportunities for the United States and Italy to enhance information sharing to support counterterrorism cooperation and the screening of migrants and asylum seekers," the statement pointed out.

Johnson and Alfano also discussed European border management capabilities and cybersecurity, the statement added.
